High-pressure water mist reduces cooling demand in data centres
)
Data centres are a hot commodity in more ways than one: They provide the backbone of today’s global digital infrastructure, and they require efficient cooling because increasing rack power also means higher rack temperatures. A high-pressure water mist system from SEM-SAFE Fire Safety A/S, fully owned by Siemens, reduces cooling demand whilst providing efficient fire suppression.
Reduced cooling demand with any cooling technology
When a SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system is activated, water is forced through nozzles at high pressure, forming a mist of very small droplets. The mist cools the fire like a traditional sprinkler and simultaneously starves it of oxygen like a gas system. It is very efficient against fires and completely harmless to humans, and since relatively little water is used to produce the mist, there is little water to clean up after activation.
The SEM-SAFE® nozzles reduce demand on the cooling system because they have been tested and approved for higher nozzle release temperatures than standard nozzles. This allows a higher ambient temperature in the data centre halls which reduces cooling system performance requirements – and energy consumption.
A SEM-SAFE® system works with any cooling methodology including air cooling, immersion cooling, and direct-to-chip cooling, and it is equally suitable for above-floor and below-floor installations. In short, it ensures unmatched fire protection in all fire risk areas of any data centre, no matter how it is designed and how it is cooled.
Designed for scalability
A SEM-SAFE® system is divided into zones and is only activated in zones where a fire is detected. Designed with scalability in mind, it can easily be expanded to cover more areas as the data centre grows. The SEM-SAFE® system is ideal for both new-build and retrofit projects, even when space is limited as it uses smaller-diameter pipes than traditional sprinkler systems.
A global leader with extensive experience
With a high-pressure water mist fire suppression system from SEM-SAFE Fire Safety A/S, data centre designers can simultaneously ensure high fire safety and satisfy any cooling requirement. We have pioneered high-pressure water mist systems for decades, have extensive experience from several data centre projects, and provide support and assistance through our worldwide network of partners.
