Open Path Ahead – The Open Compute Project and the Open AI Fungible Data Center
06 May 2026
Green Innovation
The AI revolution is fueling an unprecedented data center construction boom, injecting hundreds of billions into the economy and reshaping IT hardware and facility design. However, siloed efforts among hyperscale operators, neocloud providers, and enterprises are slowing innovation and extending deployment timelines. The Open Compute Project (OCP) Community is leading open innovations to standardise power delivery, cooling, and mechanical systems, while enhancing management telemetry for next-generation AI workloads. Key advancements include Open Rack v3, the Mt. Diablo specification, and Google’s Project Deschutes.
The Open Data Center for AI Strategic Initiative is driving standardisation to create fungible data centers—facilities that can easily adapt to diverse AI workloads with minimal customisation, enabling colocation providers and enterprises to support a wider range of tenants and workloads efficiently. This session will also explore practical implementation strategies for deploying these standards, with a focus on sustainability and heat reuse, as demonstrated by ThermoIT’s innovations in thermal management and IT infrastructure optimisation.
